I have driven by this place and wondered about it for years. I knew it had to be good because despite its modest exterior, its been around for as long as I can remember. I started hearing word that yes, indeed, it was worth a shot. So, the other night when nothing sounded good to eat. I headed here. Sure, fried food is bad for you, but it tastes soooo gooood! I always assumed that a southern family must own the place. I don't believe that's the case, though. There is an older Asian gentleman who's often working there, as well as a woman who I believe is his wife. In any case, I haven't had the guts to try anything like gizzards, but so far, this place has certainly satisfied my fried cravings! When a joint has the word "fabulous" in the name, they better bring it, and Mary's does. The fried fish? Fabulous. I just wish they had tartar sauce that wasn't outta packets. Onion rings? Pretty durn great too. And they're so greasy they put an extra towel in the box to absorb the grease (as well as keep the heat in, I suppose). My fella loved the chicken, too. If you're ready to say "screw it" to eating healthy and just want to be sure that whatever you get is fried to a crispy golden brown, this is the place to do just that -- and on the *cheap*! One funny thing, though -- for a place that rocks at frying things, the actual french fries are surprisingly sorry. Skim 'em and get onion rings instead. Don't forget your cash - no checks or credit cards taken!

Four stars for the chicken. The sides leave something to be desired. Bring cash.

Mary's is not the place to go if you are stuck on appearances, the signs are all pretty much from the 1970s, the place looks dingy and the woman who works the counter most of the time, isn't exactly the smile-y sort. But, having said all that, the chicken is fantastic. Peppery, and crispy. Most of the sides are clearly food service grade, not terribly remarkable. But the Coleslaw is serviceable, out of the bag biscuit is OK but I do like the mashed potatoes. A while back they had something that resembled Korean Twigum (sp?) that was good. My husband really likes the reuben hoagie but I have to get the chicken any time I'm there so I can't vouch for it personally.

We got a 4 piece jumbo dinner which included 4 pieces of chicken, a roll, and 2 sides. We also ordered a 2 piece fish and fries dinner as well onion rings. The chicken was pretty normal. I personally like my fried chicken crispier, but I liked it okay. The roll was also normal, but I really did not like my onion rings. There was too much breading around the onion ring, and it was just not appetizing. We actually ended up throwing that away. Fries were like typical fast food fries, and the fish was okay. I ended up peeling out the exterior and only eating the fish. Disappointingly, they also didn't serve Mac n' Cheese or Corn on the Cob. All in all, my 2 star rating says it all - "Meh. I've experienced better"

grease is the word - shit in a bag is more like the idea.

Always passed by here but never tried it until a couple of weeks ago (a couple of times actually). The chicken here is good, you can tell it is seasoned with pepper. I have also had their onion rings, which are really good ( I have had better, but they are top of the line). I notice when i came here that a lot of people order their hoagies, which i will try real soon. A decent place, but with all that said, this place does not compare with any of the chicken places in Ypsilanti (also no credit cards here, all cash)

Fried goodness! I grew up eating at fried fish/chicken joints in Baltimore, and Mary's is the real deal. Sure, a greasy Church's or Popeye's indulgence is warranted every once in a while, but Mary's is like a taste of home. Their gizzards are the best!!!

A great place for what it is - quick fried chicken or fish. My recommendation is to - Chicken gizzards with gravy and then add hot sauce.... yummy!

The tiny old lady at the counter was really cute and friendly. The food came out very quickly. The prices seemed very reasonable to me. My wife and i got the thrift dinner. 8 pieces of fried chicken with cole slaw, mashed potatoes, gravy, and 6 dinner rolls. The chicken had really good flavoring. It had a slight kick. It was juicy and delicious. I like crispy skin. The gravy was good and coleslaw is great. Only thing that was so-so was the mashed potatoes. They were a bit bland. But overall a great place. I definitely will come back again!

Drove by this place several times over the years but never stopped it. Given the lack of quality fried chicken in the area, I decided to finally try this joint out. As I walked up, I saw the special in the window for Wednesdays...3 piece chicken meal with mashed potatoes w/ gravy, coleslaw and a roll for $5.99. Just my luck today is Wednesday so I go for the special. The chicken was fried golden and seasoned well. The skin was a bit dry for my liking...maybe honey or something may have helped. The meat underneath was juicy and tender. The mashed potatoes and chicken gravy were piping hot and maybe even better than the chicken. The slaw was similar to KFC but without the pineapple juice sweetness...more like Chick-Fil-A. The roll was almost a throw away. Not bad overall...given the lack of competition, this place survives.

First of all, the owners - adorable and kind. I secretly want them to adopt me but then I'd gain a lot of weight from eating too much. I don't know where to begin enumerating all the food my friends and I ordered. We got chicken, fish, fried mushrooms, chicken nuggets, and it came with mashed potatoes, gravy, and cole slaw. I love their cole slaw. The mayo isn't overwhelming like most cole slaws and neither is the apple cider vinegar. I'm not really a guru on fried foods other than I know I like them. The chicken was breaded really well and good. The fish was more on the bland side, but you can dip it in tartar sauce and it's all good. I forget how much this ended up costing, but not a lot at all. The store is kind of dumpy looking but once you get past that, you'll realize the food is good. It's not so good for dining in because they only have three tables. Also, bring cash.

Excuse me but if you have not eaten at Mary's WHAT are you doing!? They can't stay open forever you know. On the inside this place has nothing to brag about. It probably has not changed since it opened in the 70's? 80's? I don't know but that does not matter here people. This is the place your taste buds have been waiting for. I always get the cheese steak hoagie. By always I mean the one time a year I go there and then go to the gym to try and fight off the diabetes and obesity that is sure to follow a meal at Mary's. Again, that does not matter. My hubs gets the fish meal or something like that. Mary's is one of those best kept secrets you hear about on the Travel Chanel or Food Network. Go there while you can or miss out on the best.

I was wavering back and forth between 3 and 4 stars. The fried chicken is really tasty and reminds me of KFC's original recipe, which I like. The owners are very pleasant, and good, friendly customer service should not go unappreciated. The prices are average, but they have some well priced specials. We got mashed potatoes with gravy, cole slaw, and dinner rolls for sides. The mashed potatoes also reminded me of KFC in consistency. They're unfortunately pretty bland. However, the chicken gravy is very flavorful, which kind of makes up for the lack of taste in the actual potatoes. Also, you get A LOT of gravy, which is appreciated, since it goes well with the actual chicken. The cole slaw was good, according to my fiance - I didn't eat any. The dinner rolls were just a half package of slightly warmed Aunt Marie's dinner rolls, which was quite disappointing. Like I said, I was going back and forth between 3 and 4 stars. The chicken was good, but the sides were underwhelming. The prices didn't blow me away, but the customer service is very good. They only take cash, so that's a bummer. I plan on going back to satisfy a future fried chicken craving.

We went here to get some take out dinner. The lady at the front is sweet. We ordered the thrift combo family dinner. The chicken flavor was very tasty, the cole slaw was on the sweeter side, mashed potatoes was plain, and the gravy was very thick and tasty. We enjoyed our dinner that night, with my nephew saying it was the beat fried chicken. We will be going back to support this little restaurant.

Their chicken is good and I usually come here or KFC for fried chicken. The owners are really nice too.

Such moist fried chicken. My dad had fish and chips and loved that as well. Friendly staff.

Cheesesteak came highly recommended and was nothing that had me doing cartwheels. Husband either and gosh knows he is a sucker for meat and cheese. So chopped it seems almost like hamburger and even with extra cheese, there is something missing. Chicken we had seemed less than fresh. No idea if it is stellar fresh but trust me, do not accept anything less than. I would be willing to try again just to have a true piece to judge. I know the cheesesteaks are not for me but I really cannot judge beyond lukewarm chicken fairly other than it peeves me it was served at all. Overall just not a good first impression. At all. Shame, as we were quite excited based on our friend's enthusiasm.

Let's get a few things out of the way. First, Mary doesn't exist, or if she did, this restaurant has not been run by her in a long time. Second, if your health is in any way a concern, just avoid this place. It's grease paradise. Finally, they don't take credit cards. I know, I know, but you just have to accept it or don't bother coming here. I think it's charming, but some people hate it. Now onto the main reason I'm even reviewing Mary's: if you like onion rings in any way, shape or form, you have to try them here. These are masterpieces of breading, grease, and onions, with just a little bit of magic mixed in. I might have had better onions rings once on a business trip near Alma, Michigan, but I don't live 3 blocks from those onion rings. I do live 3 blocks from Mary's. I like other food items here, such as the cheese steak (it's very good) and of course, the chicken. I think the food here has a great "mom n' pop" flavor that you simply can't get at just any chicken joint. Be warned that near the end of the night, I'm convinced that they will pre-cook some chicken and just heat it up for you. I've only experienced this once, but reading Jake S.'s review here made me realize that they might get lazy at times and do this. But hey, those onion rings are the main reason to come here, and they absolutely have to fry these in the moment. Take my word for it: onion rings.

I went here a couple of years ago and really enjoyed the fried chicken. The fish was just so-so. But I definitely hope to make a trip here again.

This place is awful and overwhelmingly disappointing. The food is a joke and everything is either frozen, sitting out for a long time, or boxed/canned. The place is run by an old Asian couple, so I really question how authentic their "soul food" is. We ordered the "economy" package - 12 pieces of chicken, cole slaw, mashed potatoes and gravy. We also got a 3 piece fish dinner. Fried chicken - something raised a red flag to me when all our food was ready in about 5 minutes. The chicken wasn't horrible, but it was slightly overseasoned, and some of it was dry. The skin was soggy and tasted like it had been sitting out for awhile and reheated, especially considering how quickly we got it. Mashed potatoes - these are definitely instant boxed mashed potatoes. I used to work in the U of M dining halls as a student and know first-hand that they used instant mash, and the potatoes at Mary's actually taste worse than the dorm food. Bland and artificial tasting - absolutely disgusting. Gravy - I could tell right away this was from a jar/can and not real homemade gravy. I make gravy all the time, so the thing that threw me off was the very light color that you often find with fake gravy. It was lumpy, a little congealed, and overall horrible. Coleslaw - it's bland, nothing more to say here. Good coleslaw depends on the dressing, and this tasted watered down. Rolls - they gave us Aunt Millie's rolls from a grocery store. How do I know this? Because they gave us the rolls still in the Aunt Millie's bag... Fish dinner - came with 3 pieces of cod, fries, coleslaw, and a roll. Another red flag came up when we found out they don't make their own tartar sauce - they use packets. Learn from our mistake and just NEVER order fish from a place that doesn't make their own tartar sauce. The fish was far from fresh. If you try the fish here, and then try it from a better place like Casey's Tavern, the difference in quality, taste, and freshness is night and day. Overall, the food was just BAD - there's no other way to describe it. I have no idea how anyone thinks this is even close to good. Before we stepped in, we were joking about how we should've just gotten KFC, but ironically their food would've seemed high class and delicious in comparison. Spare yourself the disappointment and eat somewhere else. I'm so disgusted with the food that I had to write this 15 minutes after we ate.

Had another Mary's experience and it was great as usual. Ordered a large container of gizzards and a fried breast piece. The fried chicken was really moist and had a great crust of breading that was nice and spicy. The gizzards were as wonderful as always. Dark, chewy meat with soft breading and tasty blend of spices. This is the place to go for fried chicken.

So per a yelp review I thought I would venture 2 miles off 75 to get some fast food that's not wrapped in a piece of paper and is pretty much just a belly filler. 12 piece Fried Chicken doused in hot sauce, yes please! I was a little thrown off guard by the fact that Mary was a skinny old asian guy! Soul food with an asian flare question mark But I was wrong- dah chicken was dah bomb diggity! We also shared a 3 piece fish dinner, my kiddos loved it It was a win win for my team! hopped back in the old 99 oil burning surburban with happy bellies Take cash it's the only thing they accept, go potty elsewhere, No public commode

Mary's is a quirky neighborhood take-out chicken joint. I've always enjoyed the chicken at Mary's, preferring it over the generally greasier national chain chicken available nearby. The dark batter gives it a simple, tasty flavor. As much as I enjoy the chicken, my personal favorite is the Reuben Hoagie. The sides vary pretty widely, from average coleslaw to rather good onion rings. There are a couple of tables, but the room isn't much to look at. Mary's has good, solid food, but I wouldn't call it a destination restaurant.

I was craving chicken but really didn't want to roll the dice at KFC. So my husband suggested Mary's. He's been to Mary's many times for their gizzards. This has always kept me away because every time I see them I turn an interesting shade of green (green is not my color!). I decided I shouldn't let this affect my opinion of the place as a whole so we venture to the ATM. After getting the restaurants much sought after cash only, we arrived at Mary's. I'm a breast girl so I ordered my pair and my husband got a small gizzard. We took it to go because as someone said you don't go here for ambiance. The size of the breasts surprised me. They were small but not too small. Basically they looked normal. These were not the gigantic pieces that leave you wondering where these human size chickens live. The first bite was excellent, it wasn't too moist (yes, that's possible) and not too dry. There was an excellent spice to it and the breading wasn't soggy at all. However I do think someone was right about Mary's getting things half right. My second piece was kind of lacking the wonderful flavor that the first had. My husband couldn't make it through his gizzards. He said he remembered why he hadn't been there in a while as the last time he got the gizzards, he wasn't impressed. Basically give Mary's a shot as I think them making it great 50% of the time is better than KFC's 25%.

This chicken is so. addicting. It's the kind of chicken that makes you forget that you ordered side dishes with it, and then when you remember that you have sides, you're all "whatevs, screw that" and you take another piece of chicken. That said, the coleslaw is quite good, and I don't even like coleslaw that much. The onion rings are fantastic as well, but when I ate them alongside the chicken, I started to feel like I'd just downed a bucket of grease. Next time I'd probably eat them with something less fried (if that's possible? I'm not sure). You can probably skip the mashed potatoes, too. I also tried the cheesesteak hoagie that my husband got when he didn't want chicken (freak, I know), and it was surprisingly delicious. As others have mentioned, you can only pay in cash. But this is a great place to go when you want something cheap and on the fly, and you need your weekly fill of delicious grease.

I was craving fried chicken and I saw this place. I thought it was kinda weird that absolutely noone is in that store, but I thought I'd just check it out. My husband was starving at home so I ordered to go. I thought 8 pieces would fill us up. When we got the food, it was in a small container. They were VERY tiny. It was just me and my husband, and it didn't even fill me up and I'm not a big eater. The leg piece bearly had ANY meat on the bone. The amount of meat on a leg piece was literally the size of my two thumbs stuck together. The breast piece was small too; it was the size of a thigh piece you would get at Popeye's. I found out that they gave me wrong change, he took $3 more than he should have. My bill should have been $11... he took $14. I don't know if he did this on purpose, because he was talking to me how I looked Korean while he was giving me the change.

Ordered the three piece chicken dinner. Was handed grease in a box. Inside was a generous four, rather then three, pieces of chicken! The dark meat was moist and tasty, but the white was dry to the point that I couldn't finish the fourth piece (making my meal effectively a three piece deal). The battered outside of the chicken was bland and short on spice. The coleslaw wasn't bad; it was chopped finely like a tabbouleh. The mashed potatoes and gravy -- I suspect came from rehydrated packages of potato and gravy powder. I'm fond of mom and pop shops, but this one had too much of a fast food feel to it, and evoked memories of its red and white corporate counterpart. Come now Mary, live up to your fabulous name!

Unfortunately, my experience here wasn't all that great. We got one of the family platters, which came with 12 pieces of chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, coleslaw, and rolls. Here's the breakdown: Fried chicken - of course, this is the most important thing. Some pieces were good, moist, and flavorful, with a little bit of spiciness. Unfortunately, this wasn't consistent. Of the 12 pieces we got, about half were good, and the other half were really dry and tasted like they had been sitting around for hours. Mashed potatoes - some of the most flavorless mashed potatoes I've ever had. Gravy - pretty mediocre. It wasn't awful, but gravy is supposed to taste a hell of a lot better than this. Rolls - also not that great. These should've been a lot more flavorful. Coleslaw - pretty decent, but nothing spectacular.

It's not every day that you get to find a down-home, non-corporate, mom-and-pop fried chicken diner in a yuppie-ish town like ann arbor. It really is the best in town, don't be fooled by the 1980's style signage and cash-only policy- this place is tops, and novel too, if you're into that kind of thing. Yeah, maybe the fish isn't the way to go- but who expects top-notch fish from a fried-chicken restaurant?! I eat hippie-granola foods most of the time, but when I want a special treat, mary's is my guilty pleasure. The two owners work really hard (only two employees!) and I read that they passed their safety/health inspection with flying colors (zero violations) in the ann arbor news, which is more than many other (fancier) downtown ann arbor restaurants can claim. My recommendation- get a box of fried chicken and a pint of coleslaw. And take it to go. While the chicken is "fabulous", the ambience is not-so-fabulous. Nice folks though. On a side note, I disagree with the gentleman below who said the 'slaw was mediocre- it's actually quite good, if you like coleslaw that is sweet and flavorful but not too mayonaise-ey. And seriously, were you expecting the rolls and the gravy to be awesome? Its just not that kind of place. Chicken is their thing. If you're going to eat fried food, you might as well make sure its the most delicious, right?

If you want some serious good fast food come here. They only have like two tables inside so you might want to get it to go. They have the best Philly cheese steak sandwich. The fried chicken and fish are also really good too. It is kind of hard to find this on Packard. I never would have known about it if my friend didn't tell me about!
